How one company designed a website that shot to the top in 6 months

By Adam T. Sutton, Managing Editor, Mequoda Group LLC

Socrates Media began helping small businesses and consumers manage themselves financially and legally online five years ago. They started with Socrates.com, established CompleteLandlord.com about 18 months ago and more recently launched RentSlicer.com. With two new websites focused on real estate, the company is gaining traction on its climb to the top.

CompleteLandlord’s weekly newsletter, Landlord Advisor, saw subscription jump from 10,000 to almost 50,000 from Nov. 2006 to April 2007, according to Senior Vice President for Marketing and Editorial Scott Brueggeman. The site is aimed at “helping landlords save time and money” and has almost 70,000 unique visitors a month and “growing very quickly,” Brueggeman said.

“We’re probably the top landlording site,” Brueggeman said.

How did CompleteLandlord ignite this audience boom? Its publishers started listening to Mequoda Managing Director & Chief Information Architect Don Nicholas when CompleteLandlord was launched.

Socrates started making CompleteLandlord a Mequoda website based on Don Nicholas’ guidance through the best practices in the media website world. Now they have an elaborate marketing system, websites designed to optimize user and publisher goals and effective methods for monetizing their ongoing customer relationships.

“Having good content is incredibly important and having a navigable website is critical,” Brueggeman said.
